Creative Clay Fish Workshop
Join us for a relaxing and hands-on workshop where you’ll make your very own pair of ceramic fish — one big, one little — using our Derbyshire stoneware clay, pottery tools, and colourful slips. No experience needed, just come along and enjoy some creative time out.

Price: £40.00 per person

For adults (18+) — suitable for all skill levels and fully accessible

What to Expect on the day: The session begins with a friendly demonstration from our team, showing you the steps and techniques you’ll use throughout the workshop. We’ll guide you through the process with plenty of tips and ideas, perfect whether you’re new to clay or just looking to try something different.

You’ll use slab-building techniques to shape and decorate your own set of two clay fish.

Follow our easy-to-use templates and add detail and texture with our decorating tools, then take a break for a cuppa before moving on to the fun part - colour! Use our vibrant clay slips to bring your fish to life with your own unique design or we have lots of ideas to inspire you.

After the session, we’ll kiln-fire your creations for you to collect at a later date to display at home as a reminder of your time with us.

Our team will be on hand throughout to support and inspire you - come solo or with family and friends to enjoy this creative, feel-good experience.

CRAFTING TIME: Please meet at the Denby Craft Studio & Welcome Desk ready for your workshop to promptly start. This is a 3 hour workshop. Please note that all bookings need to be booked up to 48 hours in advance.

WHO’S IT FOR: This adult craft workshop is perfect for all abilities and is fully accessible to everyone.

NOTES: All materials, including an apron, will be provided on the day. As you will be working with clay and paint, we advise you to wear something that you don't mind getting dirty.

A free hot drink is also included, which can be enjoyed on the day in Bourne’s Coffee Shop & Bistro.

Please note that on occasion, clay work may crack or break in the kiln firing process and this is beyond our control. In the unfortunate event that this should happen we will contact you and advise of the options available.

We will contact you when your creations are ready to collect (within 5 - 6 weeks)

Father’s Day Weekend ~ Pottery Painting & Clay Making Sessions 
Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June - selected times available

Enjoy some special family time together and celebrate those who mean the most with our paint and clay activities at the Denby Craft Studio. Choose from one of the following activities per person on the day:

1. Clay Making Activity: Using our rollers and decorative stamps, make a lovely, personalised coaster from our Derbyshire clay, or follow our instructions to shape and spell out a meaningful word. Creations can be taken home on the day to air dry and paint ~ £7 per person (ticket entry price will be deducted on the day)

OR

2. Paint a Denby Plate: Hand-paint onto a Denby Medium plate using our colourful glazes to keep or gift as a keepsake for the Dad in your life. Fired creations will be ready to collect in a few weeks time ~ £14 per plate (ticket entry price will be deducted on the day)

OR

3. Paint a Personalised Denby Mug: Paint a Denby Mug using our colourful glazes and leave it with us to fire in our kilns and collect when ready to use or gift to someone special ~ £10 per mug (pay on the day)

OR

4. Paint a Fun Pottery Shape: Choose from our selection of fun pottery shapes and add some colour using water-based paints to take home on the day. Once home, you can use a clear varnish to make your item glossy. Please note that items will not be kiln fired ~ Prices start from £8 per item (pay on the day).

 TIME: Choose from the available session times. Your chosen craft session lasts for 50 minutes. If you need longer, please also book the following session to make the most of your experience. 

You are also welcome to paint a pot or take part in another activity during your 50-minute experience if time allows. Additional costs apply and can be paid for on the day.

Notes: All activities are self-led, but our friendly team will be on hand to offer any support.

- We will be getting creative with paint, pens and clay and therefore recommend that children wear items they don't mind getting messy.

- Children must always be supervised by an adult(s) and a minimum of 1 adult per 3 children is required. Please also refrain from eating inside the Denby Craft Studio, thank you.

- Denby Pottery Painting: The following Denby glaze colours, violet and bluebell blue contain a degree of cobalt which is an allergen.

- Denby Craft Activities: some activities may include use of feathers or balloons please make us aware of any allergies before your visit.

Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty during our fun and friendly Pottery Throwing Experience. Using Denby clay and under the guidance of our experienced potters, you will learn various techniques to create your own bowl. Perfect for all abilities, this experience introduces pottery throwing, while you create your own pot to be proud of.

You are very welcome to bring somebody along to the experience, to take photos and give encouragement. Or why not book an experience for two or three people, where you can use our three potter's wheels at the same time? (Max number of 'participating throwers' is three per class. If you book a space for one person, please note that the second and third space may be filled by another participant).

Left in the skilled hands of our potter, your hand-thrown pot will be fired and finished in your chosen Denby glaze colour (Matt grey, Chalk White or Imperial Blue) ready to collect within 6-8 weeks. There’s also the option to have your item posted out to you for an additional £5, which can be organised with the team during your visit.

Complete your Pottery Throwing Experience with a free cuppa at Bourne’s Coffee Shop & Bistro. Due to Bourne’s Coffee Shop & Bistro opening times, if your booking is after 2pm, you will need to enjoy your cuppa before your Pottery Throwing Experience.

WHO’S IT FOR: Suitable for all abilities, including complete beginners. Budding potters must be a minimum of 3ft 6 and under 16's must  be supervised by an adult. This would be suitable for 8 years and over. Please note that if you are booking for one person, there may be other participant present during your experience

Pregnant women may find operating the Potters’ wheel uncomfortable and restrictive but may take part at their own risk. We advise that anyone who is pregnant, should consult with their physician before booking onto a Pottery Throwing Experience. Please ensure that the instructing Potter is made aware on the day of your visit so that any adaptions can be made.

Please note: There are electric motors within the pottery wheel and customers with pacemakers should always consult with their physicians first when using motor-run or electronic products.

PRICE: £50 per person

SAFETY: Please ensure that the following safety guidelines are adhered to for your safety during this exciting experience.

• Any sleeves longer than the elbow must be rolled back leaving the forearms bare.
• All jewellery is to be removed from the hands and wrists with the exception of a wedding band. If a wedding band is kept on then disposable Nitrile gloves will be available to wear.
• Any jewellery, neckties or scarves worn around the neck must be removed.
• Hair may have to be tied back if there is a risk of entanglement.
• Short nails are preferred as longer nails make the throwing process more difficult.
• Suitable closed footwear to be worn.
• As this experience involves using pottery equipment, we kindly ask that you don’t drink alcohol before or during the session to help keep things safe and enjoyable for everyone.
